 Flagler Beach
Stopped at Flagler Beach a few miles north of Daytona for one of my favorite rides. Course is pretty much two loops between Flagler and Ormond. The ride starts with a climb over the intra-coastal water way that is one of the three climbs in today’s ride. Had a good spin over the climb and was aided by a good stiff tailwind on the climb. A quick right turn at the Atlantic Ocean is followed by a fifteen mile run down the A1A. It was a fairly hot mid-eighties day with a wicked Southwest wind blowing. Started off at a good clip but slowed about halfway and stopped fighting the wind and concentrated on the dunes and rolling breakers. Usually there is a pleasant combination of sea air and fish fries along the stretch but it was so windy that I didn’t catch that sensation today. Decided to cruise to the turnaround and try to hammer the next crossing of the intracoastal over SR 40 in Ormond. Came out of the saddle and hammered about half the climb and then pretty much collapsed as the wind was really ripping over the top. Barely maintained eight miles an hour over the top of the six percent climb. Once over the bridge a turn to the north gave me a good tailwind. Kept a good cruising speed through state forest and really enjoyed riding through the salt marshes and under the jungle canopy. Speed was only about half speed of the glory days of the Catfish Centuries back in the nineties, but I was only a pack of one this time around. Second loop was similar but running back down the John Anderson Hwy parallel to the A1A. Second attempt at the SR 40 bridge climb was much, much weaker and I struggled right from the start. Finished off the ride with a twenty mile tailwind run but was two wasted to get much speed out of it and was very happy to see the truck at the finish. So had a couple of good hours of riding with one and a half good climbs out of three.
