I needed to get in a 24 mile ride to keep up my 40-mile-a-week goal. I was going to be pressed for time as I had grocery shopping early in the morning, then a 2 p.m. baseball game at Furman. I got to the ICAR hoping to get in 15 miles before the game then I wanted to get another 10 in at Furman after the game. I started riding and was stunned at how weak my thighs were. I had a colonoscopy on Wednesday (oh the joys of aging!) and I guess that it had weakened me to the core. At first I thought that riding was a lost cause. Hills were a real struggle and I was slow to get up to speed, but I pressed on. I had to climb the hills in 3rd and 4th gear instead of 5th and 6th gears. Even though it was a struggle I got in just over 25 miles and had a good average speed for me. The mileage is two miles farther than any ride since I started riding. BTW, Furman beat Ohio 13-8 to cap off the day.
