South wind has been blowing in some warm weather and quite a bit of rain. Today the rain let up in the morning and the sun came out for a few hours in the afternoon making for dry roads now washed clean of salt. There was quite a bit of sand still on the hills of the secondary roads and the shoulder of the highway in Pine Valley is all torn up but good riding was had. Have taken a couple days off hoping to shake my latest health depression and wasn't sure how the ride would go. First climb up Fitzpatrick did not go well as lungs were struggling and legs didn't seem to have much power. Resigned to a slow day and kept chugging along cresting with a rather disappointing nine point zero average. I did do a short hill before the big climb instead of riding the flats through town, but still anything less than ten isn't a good ascent. Relaxed a bit once over the top of the five hundred foot climb and headed into rollers and a stiff headwind in the mid teens. Legs started to feel good once into the rollers and had good flow making strong efforts over the small short climbs usually coming out of the saddle. Got the average back up to eleven and a half by the second checkpoint on Millport Hill. Nothing spectacular but encouraging after the poor climb. Flew down the descending rollers to Horseheads before making the turn into the tailwind. Did some math in Horseheads and was hoping for a seventeen average if I could keep the speed over twenty-two non the final twelve miles of downgrade. Legs felt great and pushed the big gears easily nudging twenty-five for most of the way. Had to jump from the shoulder into the highway a couple of times in both Pine Valley and Millport as the pavement on the shoulders was all turn up and deep potholes were prevalent. Try to keep out of the road on SR14 as it is heavily trafficked. Doubt any repairs will be made until the hot patch manufacturers fire back up in late April or May. Easily got the seventeen after the fast downgrade and probably could have got a coveted eighteen if I hadn't fudged the climb. Couple more days of warm weather left before the snow returns later next week. Hopefully the rain will keep falling at night and leave the days for cycling.
