 First Century
Weather was slated to be fantastic for a change. Bright sunshine, warm and mild winds. Headed back out the highway to Clarksville for the first quart of my hundred mile square. Took it easy into the headwind as really had little idea of what my fitness level was and hoped to have a fun ride rather than a sufferfest. Passed through Detroit unmolested and didn't see any chalk mark outlines in the road, so I get everyone survived yesterday's game of frogger. Stopped in McDonalds in Clarksville and had my first Quarter Pounder in two months. Didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would but it did provide good fuel for the rest of the ride. Headed up 37 to Negley and made good time with the following crosswind. After turning to Negley I was off the highways and back on the secondary roads. Got a couple of good dog sprints in against some rather large St Bernard type dogs. Fortunately they weren't very fast and didn't seem to enjoy the chase. Thought I would be seriously injured if I made any sort of contact with these beasts as they quite possibly outweighed me. Other than an occasional sprint not much happened until I turned north on 196 and headed toward Shady Shoals. Road surface was tradional Texas shake & bake and the constant vibration and miles started to take a toll. Started to get some pain in my feet that got worse with every bump. After fifteen miles of increasing pain I finally got some relief when I got back on the four lane and headed south on 271. After ninety I had had enough and probably would have abandoned except it wasn't an option as there were no longer any bailout options left. Finished off the hundred but ended up with seventy miles of good ride and thirty miles of suffer.
