 Flagler Beach
Drove north to Flagler Beach for my last ride in Florida for this tour. Roads would be basically the same ones I have been riding for the last week but by starting in Flagler at least the last fifteen miles would be tailwind. Thought I might get a break by getting out early and getting the most windswept leg of my double loop out of the way before the wind picked up. No such luck today as an some incoming weather had stirred things up right off the bat. So hunkered down and cranked down the A1A at a very hard thirteen mile an hour average. Thought I would get some speed back through the jungle but legs are still worn down and couldn't develop any speed. Second loop was a little easier than the first as the wind was shifting a little and occasionally would gust out of the west. Had a little excitement while climbing my third overpass of the day when I was passed rapidly by three riders. Reacted quickly and caught on and went over the top in their draft although one of the three couldn't keep up on the half mile climb and dropped off the back. Was hoping they would regroup and head the same direction I was so I could get a little drafting in but I turned at the base of the bridge and they went straight. Slowed down and spun the last leg easily. Got caught and passed by two of the riders again a couple of miles later. Tried to jump on but reacted too slowly and had no acceleration. Pushed myself and got the pace into the twenties which was enough to keep even with the duo but wasn't closing. My speed started dropping after a couple of miles but so did theirs and I started closing the gap. Got within ten lengths but wasn't within the sweet draft when their course separated from mine and I had to spin the final six or seven miles alone. Constant wind continued to wear me down and had another day where my lack of speed became evident again.
