 Soaking Rain
Temperature got up into the seasonal fifties today but the day also included high winds and occasional showers. Had a hard day on the trainer yesterday and tomorrow looks like a decent day for a long ride, so I wasn't too concerned with missing a day. On the other hand, I registered for the Scranton metric which is coming up in two weeks and I really need to get some decent road miles in before hitting the hills. Sun came out for a bit midday and radar showed a window that should remain open for an hour. Picked a twenty mile course with a wind aided first climb to Rock Stream. Didn't think I would finish in an hour, but thought I could get a majority of the ride in before the showers hit. Legs felt good with the tailwind but couldn't get the heart rate up very high after running at max for over an hour on the trainer yesterday. Got over the climb a bit on the tired side but wasn't too bad as the remainder of the ride was tailwind and one two mile light climb into the wind before finishing with a long downhill also into the wind. My hour window closed after thirty four minutes when a light rain started. It really wasn't unpleasant as at least it was in the fifties, and I wasn't lamenting the cold weather as I usually have been doing on rides of late. Fun ended though in Reading Center when the sky opened up. Between the wind and hard rain, I was quickly soaked. The rain stung my face on the downhill and the raindrops were falling at a forty five degree angle, which seems to approach the optimal angle for soaking cyclists, and it must have descended form a high altitude as it felt like I was being immersed in ice water. Coasted into Watkins and fortunately the rain returned to falling lightly. Streets were full of puddles and running streams so I didn't really get to dry off much. Sky looked to be lightening up to the south, but I had enough for the day and headed to the barn with two soakers. Wasn't surprised that I didn't see any cyclists today.
