 Devil's Branch Metric
Stayed in Macon, GA last night and drove about a half hour to get to the Devil's Branch metric. Didn't sleep well, had nothing for breakfast and was hoping to pick something up at registration, but pickings proved to be slim to none. Got a T-shirt and a map at the start. There were only about fifty riders at this event and over twenty of them were from the same club. Turned out to be more of a club ride than a traditional metric century. Course was rolling and lacked any memorable climbs or scenery. Roads were fantastic though and traffic was light and what there was friendly. It was in the upper forties at the start but winds were light all day. Pace started out fairly mild but picked up after five or six miles until settling comfortable in the low twenties. Hung in the back staying in the sweet draft. After fifteen miles there was only a dozen club members, three recumbents and one other independent rider. Wasn't having any trouble spinning with the group but was having trouble with my bladder which was causing me quite a little discomfort. Was hoping the group would stop at a rest stop but they kept on ever rolling. Couldn't take anymore after twenty-five miles and stopped to releave myself and lost the group in the process. Even though I stopped for less than a minute the group was out of sight when I got underway again. Thought I might catch a couple stragglers over the next forty miles but saw no one once I lost the group. Wasn't climbing well today and still lacked any speed on the downhills. Considered stopping at the last rest stop at fifty miles but cruised by and saw all they had to offer were bananas and bottled water. I was more in the market for cookies and brownies. Last ten miles were straight back to the start and thought that the biggest climbs of the day were going to be seven percent, but there were a couple of ten percent rollers lurking in the last two miles of the route. Hotdogs were offered after the ride, but I opted out and packed quickly and continued my journey homeward.
