Thunderstorms passed through last night and really cooled things off. Still the temperature was a reasonable seventy and there was not much wind. Forecast was for heavy rain moving in around noon but I thought I could get a fifty miler in before it hit. Headed up RT 8 out of Arkadelphia to Amity through Alpine. Road now has a really good shoulder which is a big improvement since I rode it a couple of years ago. Climbs are all highway type with shallow but long grades. Stayed pretty much in the trees until the big climb up to Alpine where there is finally some good views of the local terrain. Just spun easy and enjoyed the day though it always appeared to be threatening to rain. Got to the roundabout in downtown Amity when the first raindrops started to fall. Missed the friendly beagle that had escorted me through Amity in the past. Thought I might be able to ride ahead of the front but the rain appeared to be caused by dew point rather than a front and so rode in a steady rain for twenty five miles back to the start. Really wasn't too bad riding in the rain with the good shoulder and compliant drivers. I did note that I don't thing I saw one pot hole on the fifty mile ride. Got two soakers but stayed warm throughout the ride. Rain really fell from the sky after I got back to the truck and ended up driving through a heavy rain for the rest of the day on my drive to Mississippi.
