 Rough Day on the Bike
Had some warning signs before the start of the four climb group ride as both my resting heart rate and my weight shot up significantly over the last couple of days. Ride started out well with warm temperatures and some sunshine, although the wind was adversarial throughout the ride. Felt okay on the run to the first climb out of Watkins on 14N although I was dropped near the bottom I was able to spin my way back up to another rider halfway up the mile and a half climb, and we hammered to catch up over the top. We started working a fairly fast paceline into a strong crosswind, but I only survived one pull. I was unable to catch the end of the line and had to ride in the wind for a while to catch the line. Unfortunately I caught the line but was unable to recover before having to take another pull. After my next pull I was unable to keep the pace even in the draft and had to ride solo for two or three miles to Glenora where we regrouped. Yoyoed off the back most of the way to Dresden and got dropped on the next climb up 54 when I was unable to stand and hold the pace over a short steepish section. Had to push a nasty headwind on my own to Penn Yan. Got dropped immediately on the five mile climb up 14A out of Penn Yan and pretty much collapsed on the bike. The only contact I was able to maintain with the group was eye contact. Spun as best I could in the crosswind and was probably three or four minutes off the pace by the time I crested the hill. After a regroup in Dundee I was able to keep the up on most of the final climb but was dropped on a upward grade just shy of Reading Center. So got a good draining workout though it was a little embarrassing. Had two fair climbs, one poor and one disaster. Worst part of the ride was the wind though. Still was good to ride outside on a warm sunny day.
