 Mountain Lake
Stopped off in Newport, VA to do a short ride in the mountains on my way back north. Had to get an early start as still had a few hundred miles to drive. Goal of the ride was to climb to the finish of the Mountains of Misery Century at the Mountain Lake Resort. Ride started off on the cool side as it was only in the mid forties but began to heat up once the sun vanquished the shadows. Warmed up with a gradual climb up Clover Hollow Rd which is a beautiful twisting climb through alpine dairy fields. It is pretty easy climbing until the just before the road doubles back on itself and starts back down where it gets a bit steepish. Before heading down turned onto Rising Sink Rd where the steepish climbing continues with short sections of thirteen percent. Rising Sink dumped me out onto the easy approach to Mountain Lake that is another twisting gradual climb with spectacular views of the valleys below. Started out spinning nicely with the average grade of five percent seeming relatively mild after the recent steep stuff. Thought it would be a piece of cake but legs started to lose impetus after two of the three miles of the climb. Kept at it though and really enjoyed the climbing though the last mile wore me down. Didn't look forward to the descent of Doe Creek Rd which is a couple miles of grades in the teens. Kept the speed way down for a couple of reasons. First reason was it was still quite cold and had worked up a sweat on the ascent. Second reason was the curves were filled with gravel as there must have recently been heavy rains which had washed the gravel into the road. So ended up not descending much quicker than I had climbed as had to ride the breaks the entire way down. Once off the mountain it was a short twisting rolling ride back to Newport. Didn't get many miles in today and really would have liked to spend more time in the mountains as it is much more enjoyable terrain than the flat riding and wind in Florida. Got to love Florida though as all of my rides in Florida started off at over sixty degrees and finished in the eighties.
