 Full Sun Light Winds
Beautiful day for riding today and headed out for a few hours of riding. Started out up New Odessa hill as after feeling poorly yesterday didn't want to tax the legs to early with a struggle up the steepness that is Havana. Legs felt okay though and stood up quite a bit on the mile and a half highway climb. It is one of my least favorite climbs as it is just a constant seven percent grade. Once over the top I kept a strong pace going for the first hour of the ride. Only had a weak crosswind on the section to Van Etten and it is certainly more fun and considerably faster without the wind blowing hard in my face as it has for the last month. Got to the bottom of the climb up Wyncoop Creek in good shape and kept the strong pace going up the hill. After a pleasant climb up the hill, the speeds started climbing. Felt pretty good and thought if I caught a cross or tailwind on the section back from Elmira I would easily have a seventeen average and hopes of an eighteen if I could keep the pressure on the pedals. That hope was dashed though as the road was closed ahead and I was detoured up Hogback. Haven't done that climb from this side in ten years and so wasn't too disappointed by the reroute. Climb wasn't as steep as I remembered it but in the days of old I was racing up it at a much higher pace. Still it was a nice climb and had a very long decent into Lowman on a good road. Had lost a bit off my average by the addition of five hundred or so feet of climbing but made much of it back on the decent. Kept the speed down a bit on the descent though as I was unfamiliar with the road. Ride went south though as I turned and headed North. The wind had shifted and I had to push a headwind home. It was light though so it wasn't too difficult, but it kept the speeds out of the high twenties that I can usual achieve on the downgrade. Coupled with the numerous traffic stops in Elmira I wasn't able even to get the average up to seventeen. Had a great ride though with three good climbs and checked out a new road. It was a great day on the bike.
