 Back in the Saddle
After a strong ride in VA last month, I woke up during the night quite ill. Eventually had to abandon the VA trip and return home where I got to spend the next three unpleasant weeks in bed. Finally started to recover but pretty sure all my winter training efforts had been washed away and the upcoming racing season is no longer viable. I did get on the trainer last week and try some spinning to see if the legs would still go round. Decided today since the rain had finally abated and some occasional sun had risen the temperature to near seventy I'd try to ride outside. Initial plan was to head up the valley on the flattest route I could find and see if I could get some miles in without collapsing. Unfortunately, I was also riding into a thirteen mile an hour headwind. Started out okay but after five miles the speed came way down. Had enough of the headwind and decided I would try a short climb into some rolling terrain to get out of the wind. Thought I might end up walking but climbing turned out to be easier than riding into the wind. Had to granny gear some of the steeper parts but was elated I didn't have to walk. Felt stronger once the hill was out of the way and tried to pick up the pace. Ended up in Horseheads with an average of twelve miles an hour. Rest of the course was twelve miles of mostly downgrade and tailwind and focused on getting the average up to fifteen by the end of the ride. Ended up making the goal and actually enjoying the ride. Numbers looked poor overall with a noticeable lack of wattage output and high stress levels but at least it looks like I will be able to keep riding but not sure on what level I'll be able to perform. Already missed a couple of races but have some metrics in June that I'll focus on.
