I was needing to get some miles in today - need to get some miles in every weekend to get ready for the longer rides in May and ultimatly the week long tour in June - but the weather wasn't really inviting with temps starting in the 40's. So, late in afternoon when the temp was climbing into the mid-50's I decided I would go out to St Charles and ride on the quiet county roads there, as opposed to riding from the house and dealing with the suburban traffic. Another factor in choosing to go out to St Charles to ride is that I have a church committee meeting scheduled Monday night.
So, I got everything together, loaded the bike into the truck, drove over to the soccer park for the start/finish of the ride. Aside from the temp, the wind is always a big factor out on the flat course through farm land, especially since the corn hasn't been planted, let alone grown to be 6+ feet tall to allow for some wind break. The direction of the wind, out of the W allows for a tailwind & left-to-right crossing wind on the way out, then a headwind & right-to-left on the return of this out-and-back route.
Overall I am happy with the performance I accomplished out there. The roads were open with very few cars encountered, and since there wasn't the usualy Monday night crowd of other cyclist out there, there was no concern of being passed by the 'peleton' as the fly past me. It was just a nice couple hours on the quiet roads - quiet except the wind whistling in my ears.
