 Wyncoop Creek
Went out for a longer ride today. Exceptionally nice weather with a warm sun and moderate winds that picked up toward the end of the ride. Took the first climb very conservatively since I wasn't sure whether or not my legs would have anything in them after being missing in action yesterday. Stayed in the saddle and tried to climb steadily but legs were still not producing. I had a mild tailwind once past Odessa and tried to pick the pace up but was only able to roll into Alpine with a lowly fourteen five. Felt a little better through the rollers to Van Etten and pace climbed steadily. Tried to be more aggressive on the mild climb up Wyncoop and did much better than earlier. Still had a tailwind to Chemung and while the riding was enjoyable the effort exceeded the results. Pace climbed slowly and thought I would be able to ride the course in the planned under four hours with a moderate effort in the second half of the ride. Stopped and had the traditional Classic Coke and Zingers at the Dandy Mart. Saw two riders pulling in as I pulled out. Things went well to Lowman in the crosswind but legs got weak as the grade went up and things started to go south. Lost more time in the headwind between Elmira and Horseheads but still thought I could rally and save the day with a brisk pace on the downgrade from Pine Valley. Highway was blocked south of Millport by what looked like a fairly serious motorcycle accident. I was able to detour around the congestion by use of the bike trial but still lost some time and the fast section of the downgrade. Felt really drained for the last six miles and ended up dragging in four minutes short of my modest goal. At least I enjoyed half the ride.
