 Daily Grind Part XV
Another beautiful sunny eighty degree day spring day in Texas. Wind was moderate today and thought again about a fast ride but reality settled in and ended up with a grade A touring ride. Day started off with an encounter with some Texas youth in an old pickup while stopped at a light going out of town. We briefly chatted about how great the weather was and how life doesn't get much better than cruising around in an old pickup or on a bicycle on a sunny spring Saturday afternoon. As the light turned green they gave me the traditional "Y'all have a good day" and honked thier horn which played Dixie just like Bo and Luke Duke's General Lee does on that old Masterpiece Theater show. That was just the first of a couple of Kodak moments I had on today's ride. Legs were too heavy and I was too tired to get up to speed, so abandoned my aero configuration and sat up, unzipped my jersey and let the sunlight and warm air hit as much of my bare skin as possible. My next encounter was with a jackass who was just standing inside a fence next to the road braying away. Not sure whether he was happy or upset, but he put on quite a performance hitting notes normally unobtainable by everything except rusty hinges and rusty seesaws. I was quite disappointed that I didn't have my camera. Eventually worked my way to the halfway point and headed back to town with a following wind. It seemed like every section of wire between telephone poles had a practicing songbird on it and they like the jackass were putting on a great show. Coming back into town I encountered my first local cyclist. He was a young fellow decked out in his team colors and riding a bike with Zipp 404's, and he was packing enough water too make me jealous that he was going on a real ride while I am limited to my little loop. We chatted briefly but really couldn't hook up for a ride since I was inbound and he was outbound and I've only got another day or three until I have to keep on moving on.
Body is exhausted and nasty winds are forecast tomorrow but at least today was a great day to be on the bike.
