 Hard Climbing
While I ended the ride yesterday in good spirits the mood was not maintained for long today. Tried a little tougher climbs today but nothing too severe. Started out heading up Jackson Hill Road and found that there was nothing in the legs today for climbing. Slowly worked my way up the climb in the granny gear and got a little excitement from observing what appeared to be drug paraphernalia scattered about the shoulder of the road. Appears that someone had either had an epiphany and changed his or her life and or was being pursued by the law and discarded the evidence. Either way it was not any thing I really wanted to get involved with so just slowly pedaled on. Had a really poor time at the first turn at Catherine and the day just kept decaying as I continued struggling to the top overlooking Seymourville. The Ridge Road descent to Horseheads was rather treacherous mainly due to the extremely poor road surface. A couple of sections of road appeared to have no usable pavement at all and ended up riding sections of the course on the centerline. Had another poor climb up Hickory Grove that was mercifully short. Ended the climbing section with the long climb up Chambers Road. I had lots of time to entertain memories of racing up this hill and climbing up it in thunderstorms which was kind of nice as no pleasant memories were generated up the hill today. I was pretty beat by the time I got to the top of Catlin Hill but most of the remaining ten or twelve miles either fast down hills or brisk tailwinds, and so not much effort was required to finish. It turned out to be another pleasant sun warmed day which sort of cancelled out much of the poor climbing and sore body parts once the ride was complete. Guess I can't expect every day to be great riding.
