Looked like an ideal day to try another loop around Seneca Lake. Weather continues to be abysmal for late April with the last week full cold, high winds and more snow. Today was forecast to be in the upper fifties with a light north wind with occasional gusts to eight miles an hour. Headed out with Iron Doug a little after noon and immediately rode into a blistering North wind that seemed to be in the mid-teens. So our easy cruise turned into a hard slog into the wind. Trees are still barren with no buds evident, and those pitiful trees provided no shelter from the wind. Got dropped on the first climb out of Watkins and thought it might be a long day, but the temperature quickly rose into the mid sixties and things got a little more pleasant due to the unexpected warmth. Started spinning pretty well and felt good over the rolling course despite the wind. A couple hours latter we rolled into Geneva with a lackluster sixteen-six average. Had a puncture going through the pit just before the Geneva limit, but my no tubes sealed the leak without too much air loss. We got to turn out of the wind and headed back down the other side of the lake aided by the strong wind. Felt pretty good until the sixty mile mark where the spin started to slow down as the legs got heavy. Got dropped big time on the climb out of Valois but caught back up after a three or four miles of downgrade and finished the ride with a seventeen and a half average. We saw three other road cyclists today and probably another half dozen commuters which was encouraging.
