Less than ideal riding weather but headed out anyways. Eighty percent of the ride was either climbing or descending. Put out a steady effort on all the climbs with no heroics. Overall speed was rather slow though even with adequate climbing as the downhills were cold and ended up keeping the speed down by excessive coasting. This used to be one of my favorite courses with its four various types of climbs, but I may have to change the course to avoid Ithaca traffic, though I only pass through the fringes of the city. The climb up SR 96 is a pretty good climb ascending at a long steady three to four percent grade. The problem is there is no shoulder for the first two miles of the climb. It didn't used to be so bad, but today I was being passed by non stop traffic. Still the drivers were courteous but was too stressful for me. Thirty four miles of headwind didn't help matters much either today as I turned into it heading up through Arnot Forest and pushed it all the way to Trumansburg. Thankfully I had a crosswind on the fourth climb up through Searsburg and Steamsburg. I did actually see my shadow around mile forty-six, but the sun didn't remain out for long. The last fifteen miles was good riding with a strong tailwind and a thousand feet of elevation drop. Would have been a better ride if I had seen a bear in the forest. Rides are always better with bears.
