 Accessing the damage.

Even though I didn't get to bed/sleep until after 1 this morning, I got up at 6:15 intending to load my bike onto the truck, drive to Elsah, IL & get in a few hours of riding. It was raining outside when I got up, and as I look at the radar, there was some more rain in the area. Between the current (and on coming) weather, and the uncertainty of the aftermath from last night's storm, I scraped the idea of riding and would just play the day by ear.

I was up late last night after going up to church to survey damage, etc. I had talked with our Pastor & he was stuck in traffic trying to get there - he was still stuck in the traffic when I left church to come back home...ugh.

Our church, Fee Fee Baptist, had a part of a tree fall onto one of the vans, some shingle damage on the main sanctuary building, a broken window and a broken storm window. That area is without power, but we are still going forward with Easter Sunday schedule - 7:00 Early Service, 8:00 breakfast (I just got off the phone with Kim and they are cooking & prepping with the help of power generators, and will be back up there at 4 AM to continue), 9:00 Bible Study (may be scraped due to lack of power - i.e. dark class rooms - TBD) and 10:30 Second Service.

My father-in-law lives just a couple blocks from one impact area (Harmon Estates) in Bridgeton, only suffered a downed apple tree that took out his cable, but not the phone or power wires. We went over there late this morning and removed the branches that were leaning/lying on the power lines - no real threat there, but good to get them off incase more high winds, etc. And I know there are other church members in the surrounding area with different degrees of damage.

Now almost 24 hours later, the damage is fairly contained - not trying to minimize it but it wasn't a 'wide' tornado. The airport has major damage to one of the concourses and has been without power, therefore it has been shutdown - an erie silence like we experienced following 9/11/01. They are thinking now that they will be able to let a few flights land tonight and the allow flights to take-off tomorrow morning - this is all contingent on power being restored, and addressing a problem with the fuel delivery system.

One thing that has been repeated time & time again today on the local TV stations, that have been airing coverage all day, and in the press conferences, is the fact that there have been zero (0) reports of casualty or major injury - some relatively minor things (a handful of people were taken to the hospital last night from the airport but they have all been released), but nothing real serious or life threatening - ZERO!
