 Light Hills
Wind was light again today since if one considers less than ten miles an hour fairly calm. Still a little on the cool side in the mid-fifties but the bright sunshine helped to create fairly pleasant riding conditions. Headed out on the Rock Stream- Beaver Dams course which provided one of my strongest rides last year. Wanted to see how my riding now compares to last years high point. Got a good start in by hitting most of the lights green in Watkins and catching a strong tailwind up the first climb. Crested the first hill in excellent time and had another six miles of flat roads and tailwinds to get the average up before the next set of climbs. Had a decent climb into the wind out of Rock Stream and got to the top of the second climb still in good shape. The earlier climb had given me enough buffer that an eighteen mile an hour average was almost certain even with the rest of the climbing being weak. Question was whether I could push it up to the next level at nineteen. Sugar Hill went well and got to the top of the course still in great shape. All I had to do was hold the average on the couple of remaining small climbs and push through ten miles of headwind on remaining twenty-five miles of mostly downgrade. Had a little trouble getting over the short ten percent grade out of Townsend and it took the wind out of my sails and put it into my face. Held the average speed through to Beaver Dams but didn't have the legs to increase it which had to happen if I wanted to break nineteen. Legs kept wearing down through Johnson Hollow but once I got to the high point of the hollow all I had left was fast down hills and a final seven miles of tailwind. Pushed the big gear on the downgrade and easily got my eighteen but didn't have anything left for a rally at the end and failed to get the nineteen. Still a great ride on the bike and really love the course.
