 Shifting Winds
Another sunny today like yesterday, but it was a little cooler and with more wind. Started with the same first hill as yesterday- up Steuben past the hospital. I put more early effort in today's attempt as while the course was twice as long, and it had one less climb. I was rewarded with a pick up of one tenth of a mile an hour at nine seven. Seemed pretty pitiful for the difference in efforts between the two days, but at least it was an improvement albeit only a couple of hundred feet. The two miles of steep climbing was followed by six miles of two percent grade that went quickly with a tail wind. After reaching the top I had sixteen miles of rolling downgrade to Corning ahead of me and that went quickly as I was able to spin the big gears. Lost the tailwind around the half way mark as it shifted to more to the north giving me a following crosswind. Two or three miles outside Corning the wind shifted one hundred and eighty degrees and was in my face until I reached the city. Wind wasn't a factor as I headed up Whiskey Creek hill outside of South Corning. Spun most of the climb but got hung out on a couple of the steeper sections and lost some time. I thought I would make it up once I got to the top and anticipated a fast six miles of downhill into Elmira. The wind had other ideas and it was gusting enough in my face that I had to struggle on the downgrade to maintain twenty miles an hour. Thought things were looking up as I caught a strong southern tailwind as I made the turn in Elmira and headed mostly downhill to home. Somewhere near the Heights the wind shifted again to come from the North and my hope for a fast easy finish were dashed. Ended up struggling again on the downgrade but now had trouble holding fifteen miles an hour. Was pretty tired at the end of the sixty mile ride but figured I just caught some bad luck as at least two thirds of the ride was nasty headwinds.
