Had planned on riding inside today due to low temperatures, a cold north wind, and intermittent rain. Plan changed with a text from Steve asking if I was riding inside or outside today. I replied I could do either and it was his choice. He chose outside. We planned on a thirty-five-mile course in the west with three good climbs. It appeared according to future radar maps that we would start the ride with a little rain but with one thousand feet of climbing over four miles we could stay warm and pass out of the rain to dryer air for the remainder of the ride. I assembled my winter gear, and we headed out. Did exceptionally well for me on the first climb and I felt great for a change. Steve on the other hand couldn't use his granny gear without hitting the spokes, so he had to grunt it out when the grades went into the teens. After forty minutes of riding and with the climb behind us it was still raining, and the hills were shrouded in fog. Temperature had dropped into the mid-thirties. Radar had shown snow falling to the west of us, but it was supposed to dissipate before reaching us. Steve decided that maybe thirty-five miles might be a bit much since we were wet, and it was getting pretty chilly. We opted to veer off course in Townsend and go up Sugar Hill and cut ten miles off the ride. Felt good on the second climb of the day despite the rain and cold headwind. Once we got to the highpoint of the county on Sugar Hill, we had eight miles of downhill to Watkins. With sixteen hundred feet of climbing in our elevation bank we pretty much coasted rapidly into Watkins that is at the low point of the county. Actually had a pretty good ride despite the miserable conditions. Did get home with cold fingers and toes but nothing frozen.
