Another excellent late spring day to ride with temperature in the seventies and a stiff though not terribly oppressive wind. Saw many animals on today's jaunt starting off with a nasty looking snapping turtle working his way across the road. He was an ugly looking critter at more than a foot across. I actually had a snapping turtle break a spoke in my front wheel once. I was helping a lady shoo the turtle out of the road using my front wheel to guide him. I guess he resented being rushed and struck out and damaged my wheel. Gave today's fellow a wide berth and left him to his own devices. Didn't do much on the first climb up Old Odessa hill on my way to Searsburg and that pretty much set the tone for the day. Notched up the effort a little on upgrade to Coolie Camp but a strong headwind after the top kept my speed down through to Mecklenburg. Had my second animal encounter when three deer aborted a road crossing ahead of me and bounded alongside me for a quarter mile before returning to the deep woods. Best part of the ride was the six mile climb to the national forest as I had a strong tailwind that made it even more pleasant than usual. Had another sign that I am getting old is that a relay tower used to be visible at the top of the climb. It is still there but now the pine trees have grown high enough too obscure the view of it. I guess the other option would be they shortened the tower and upgraded the equipment. Once over the top it was fifteen miles of tailwind with a thousand feet of elevation drop. Couldn't develop any leg speed to capitalize on the bounty and ended up with a pretty slow day. I did enjoy riding through the bright green fields that are a welcome replacement from the recent greys and browns. I also got covered and tasted a few black beetle type bugs. It really wasn't too unpleasant though I don't look forward to the inevitable bee stings this nice weather will bring.
