 Two Climbs
Now that the weight has gotten to a reasonable level, I decided to focus on climbing today. Had full sun, light winds and a near seventy temperature. It was a great day for cycling. Started up Jackson Hill at a good pace. It isn't one of the harder climbs in the area but does have a mile of ten percent and another mile after that at four or five percent. Didn't feel good until after I got over the steeper section then had good spin up to Catherine. Ended up with an eleven mile per hour average whereas a twelve would have been a good rate. Turned up Ridge Road for the second half of the twelve-hundred-foot climb. It was another three miles of rolling climbing with only a one short steep section. Got to the Seymoreville Overlook with an average of ten eight where I would have been happy with anything over ten. So was quite happy with the whole climb though I can still improve drastically on the ten percent grades. Flew down Ridge Road cranking the big chainring and felt great. Had the average above fifteen by Horseheads then headed uphill again to Catlin. Second climb of the day was more gradual than the earlier one and just grinded out the miles. Crested the hill at a good pace and had a few hundred feet of descent in the elevation bank. Was hoping to pick up a tailwind on the section between Chambersburg and Watkins but my hopes were dashed as I came out of the hills into a strong north wind. Hope for a seventeen overall average died as my legs faded in the wind. After a three-mile one percent rise I was losing too much time. Couldn't make it up on the final eight miles of radical descent but enjoyed the downhill as the legs recovered. Had a satisfying day on the bike and felt I had climbed very well for a non-climber.
