Turned out to be a beautiful day for my first race of the season with bright sunshine, light wind and temperatures in the sixties. Opted to do two races today with a sixteen lap Cat IV race in the morning and a twelve lap Cat V\Masters race in the afternoon. Course was a circular two mile course with half going up and the other half going down. Climb starts out with a quarter mile long six percent grade and another three quarter miles of three percent. Goal for the morning race was to do little or no work, sit in the draft and finish with the pack. Just wanted to get used to riding at speed in a group. First couple of laps in the first race were uneventful, but a lone rider took off on the hill on the third lap and never looked back. A couple of solo riders either chased or tried to get away themselves but did so in vain. Only had one early lap that I had to struggle to hold the pace but after a while the pace slackened and the pack just went round and round. Got to the front mid-way during the race and really felt like chasing but decided it was contrary to my goal and faded back into the pack. Pace really slowed down on the next to last lap as our group was caught and passed by the front pack of the women's race which started five minutes after us. Last lap was a little faster as everyone set up for the final uphill sprint. Stayed tucked in the pack on the final climb and avoided a crash and finished seventeenth out of forty. Achieved my goal without really doing any work. Decided to ride aggressive on the second race in the afternoon. Temperatures were a little warmer which made for better racing but there was a strong headwind on the downhill section in the afternoon. First lap went slowly and I took off on the first climb and opened a good gap but was hauled back in over the top. Hit the hill hard on the second and third laps also but had a line tucked in behind me on both climbs. Got a little winded so only attacked the climb every other lap for the remainder of the race. Kept the pace high on the climb and tucked in on every downhill in the tailwind except lap eight when I stayed out in front the entire lap but really don't think I dropped anyone. Must have tired everyone out though as on the next to last lap the pack just sort of dissolved when two riders attacked and got away on the climb. I was to far back in the pack myself and too tired to respond and could only watch as they rode away. Another two or three riders got ahead of me on the last lap and ended up chasing and being caught by groups of two and three. Had a fairly good climb to the finish but wasn't sure what my overall position was but was either fifth or seventh. Did finish second in the masters division but don't know how many cat Vs were ahead of me. Rode stupid the second race but of the two races had a much better experience in the latter race.
