Got a great day for riding today with sunshine, a light wind, and warm southern air. Was joined by Mark for a long slow ride that turned out to be not so slow. Started the ride off with the steep climb up Havana that was less than pleasant. It really was the only real climb of the day and got it over with the first mile into the ride. It was followed by seventeen miles of rollers into a light wind over SR 224 to Van Etten. Headwind was a bit cruel but with the headwind and the big climb out of the way all that was left was fifty miles of easy riding. The climb up the start of Wyncoop was fairly easy and would probably not even be considered a climb later in the season as the legs grow stronger. Stopped near the top and shed the leg warmers and finally started to work on my cycling tan. We kept a good pace to Chemung where we turned out of the crosswind and headed back home on via the Wellsburg route that has a few rolling grades before becoming pan flat back thru Elmira. Mark started feeling frisky and started pushing the pace up into the lower twenties as we started trading pulls back through Horseheads. Pace got even faster on the downgrade after Pine Valley back to Montour where the speed went up into the upper twenties for the remainder of the ride. Felt good to do some speed work even late in the ride and ended up with a couple of toasted legs. Turned out to be a higher pace than expected but was overall a pleasant and at times even fun ride.
