 Longer Ride
Had planned on doing a longer ride into PA with Mighty Young Joe in preparation of the Virginia mountain metric and century coming up in May. Joe bailed without reason, but I suspect he didn't want to ride hills in the rain. There was a window of sunshine between showers in the morning and thundershowers in the afternoon. I opted to head out in the showers and a bit cooler temperature in hopes of missing a soaker latter in the day. Today's focus was to be on the hills south of Elmira and between Fassett and Mosherville with the remainder of the ride just cranking off a metric distance at a comfortable pace. It wasn't raining when I started out and didn't get any rain during the ride, but the first ten to twelve miles of the steady upgrade was cool and damp due to lack of sunshine in the valley and the road running along a river. I started out in upper fifties, and it dropped into the mid-fifties as I worked my way up the valley. After an hour of pedaling, I made Horseheads where the sun came out and improved riding conditions remarkably. Riding through Elmira on an early Sunday morning was painless, as I didn't suffer from the usual plague of stoplights. Got to the meat of the ride after twenty odd miles and hit the climbing section with the highway step climbs between Elmira and Pennsylvania. Did most of the highway climbs out of the saddle and had good snap and was able to get over the tops without cracking. Average speed had actually improved as I rolled down into Fassett. The next five miles was a gradual climb up to the top of Bird Creek Road. Didn't push too hard or do any accelerations but climbed steady and felt good during the climb. Pushed a couple sections of the downhill into Mosherville catching the thrill of some high-speed descending. The remainder of the ride was twenty-five miles of downgrade with a steady tailwind. Tried a bit to get the average speed up but with stopping to tinker with my power crank setup and traffic lights in Elmira on the way back through, I really didn't gain as much as I had hoped. Did achieve my goals of doing some aggressive hill work and getting some decent miles in the saddle. Except for the first hour it was an exceptional riding day and a pleasant experience.
