 End of Trail
Didn't get to the Avoca Park trailhead outside of Cincinatti until 11:00 but still figured I'd have plenty of time to make it the 53.5 miles to the end of the trail in Xenia, OH and return before dark. Temperature was in mid seventies when I started and forecast to get up to the mid eighties later in the day. Started out with a surprising good spin and am sure the slight tailwind was helping on the seemingly endless 1/2 percent climb. Trail was much different then on last winter's ride as the river was seldom visible now as the trees were filled out and in places the trail resembled a long green tunnel. The hours and miles passed quickly aided by my MP3 player cranking out Trent Reznor and Alice Cooper. Thought about turning around after forty as legs were feeling the strain and were generating pre-cramp signals. Chugged down the remainder of one of my three water bottles and kept going as I thought I might never be out this way again on such a nice day and would regret not going all the way. Rolled into Xenia Station in a little over three hours and sat on a park bench for awhile and ate a little of my iron rations. When I turned around and headed back I noticed that my slight tailwind had become a gusty headwind. Rode at a good clip until around eighty miles when my spin started to slow down and legs were now showing signs of fatigue. Wind only bothered in the open sections of the trail which were infrequent. By ninety miles I had developed an unpleasant saddle sore and found myself standing up frequently. Made a big push as I approached the hundred mile mark and covered a few miles in the low twenties. Pretty much had a system shut down at 105 and drank the last of my water and ate the remainder of my food. Last three miles were less than pleasant and rolled back into the trailhead with 108 miles in a little over six hours. Not sure how far the trail goes the other way but I guess that will have to wait until my next trip through Cincinatti.
