The last week has given me many reasons not to ride between twenty mile an hour winds and days of cold soaking rain. We finally had a weekend forecast with sunshine, low wind and near sixty degree temperatures. Planned on cranking out some decent miles after riding the couch for a fortnight. Got Mighty Young Joe out for a ride the hilly course to Penn Yan. As usual, the forecast came up a bit short. The sun was no where to be found. but at least we headed out in mid-fifties weather with low wind. We avoided the steep climbs and kept to highway climbs for most of the day. We were both overdressed for the first climb up SR 14 out of Watkins with the temperature hitting a balmy fifty eight degrees; that problem didn't last. Soon after we passed through Reading Center the clouds thickened and blocked whatever heat the sun was able to filter through the earlier thinner cloud cover. The temperature dropped rapidly into the mid forties where it remained for most ofthe rest of the ride. We displayed no heroics on the climbs but generated enough heat to stay comfy. The downgrades were a different matter though. We probably could have maintained a speed near thirty despite the slight headwind on the five mile down grade into Penn Yan. Unfortunately we found as the speed increased our temperatures decreased at a greater rate. The temperature got as low as forty one near the top of the climb. With the damp air, the wind chill was most unpleasant. It wasn't cold enough to numb the extremities and really wasn't too uncomfortable if we kept our speeds down. And that was pretty much how the ride went. Comfortable climbs and a comfortable pace on coming back down the lake with a decent tailwind. Did all but one steep section of a climb in the big chainring. Saw a couple of cyclists out but not much else, Didn't set any records today but got some decent miles in.
