Had a six plus hour drive after the century in GA yesterday. Felt pretty worn out as I drove to the start of today's almost totally flat century starting in Palm Coast, FL. Goal for today was set in a pack and crank off the miles nestled in a sweet draft. Hit a snag when I got to the parking lot at the start. Ride had advertised a mass start at 8:00 AM although century riders would be allowed to start the course at seven. Turns out all the century riders were to start at seven. So I was picking up my goodies as the pack of sixty riders rolled out. Went back to the truck suited up and got the bike out and headed off in pursuit at least ten minutes later. Pursuit was short lived as my legs were dead and had no top end at all. Settled in and spent the day on a solo tour. Actually caught quite a few riders but anyone I caught was quickly dropped. Caught up with a fairly large group at the second rest stop. Ate my fill of pretzels and cookies and rode with the group for a little while. Wasn't a very productive group as it was one rider towing seven or eight others. There was no rotating at all. Really wasn't any fun so I fell off the back and shadowed them for several miles. This has to be one of the most scenic centuries around as it hits the A1A for miles of ocean views, Tomoka state forest for some jungle miles and the European village of Palm Coast. The single engine pulling the group dumped the train at the next rest stop and he went off alone. After more pretzels, I went off in pursuit, though I never caught him. Legs gave out at around eighty miles and speed really dropped as I cruised down the A1A in a nasty, hot headwind. Stopped at the last rest stop at ninety miles and had some more pretzels and some orange soda. The ice cold soda seemed to pick me up as I rallied over the final ten miles and started catching some 66 milers as we rode back into town. Got the miles in but really had dead legs today. Turned out my max heart rate was about the same as my average rate from yesterday's hilly century. Really disappointed I missed the start and riding with the pack but if you have to ride alone there isn't really a better place to do it as this is an incredibly beautiful course to ride. T-shirt came in black which is my favorite now and barbeque after the ride was top quality.
