 Round the Lake I
Weather forecast looked good for the first ride of the year around Seneca Lake. Actually it had looked much better earlier in the day, but my ride was delayed as I watched the finish of a stage of the Tour of the Basque Country. While originally I was going to catch a light tailwind for the first hour of the ride that had disappeared by the time I got out. Still it was pretty nice near sixty and only light winds at the start. Didn't do much on the first climb out of Watkins and that pretty much set the tone for the day. I figured I would try to get the average up to sixteen six after the climb and then relax and hold it to Geneva where I would turn into a tailwind and try to pick up pace on the backside. Couldn't get my heartrate up where it needed to be though. The legs felt clean and I was able to keep a smooth fast cadence. I finally did get up to my goal but was rolling into Geneva when I got to it. Saw the only other rider of the day in Geneva. Usually see more but it usually is later in the season. Again I didn't have any overpowering surges on the climbs out of Geneva, but I was able to climb steady and didn't lose too much time on my way to Lodi. Was really happy to find that they have paved the formally cratered section of highway 96B south of Geneva. It used to be one of the least unpleasant parts of the ride and a little hazardous as there were occasional sections were there was no ridable shoulder and you would have to ride in the highway proper. There are still a couple of good potholes, one of which I hit dead center after being lulled into inattention by the smooth surface. Picked up a strong tailwind north of Caywood and it propelled me downhill into Watkins and home. Really didn't have much speed or power on the day but legs worked well and I didn't really tire. Good day on the bike.
