Yesterday's century covered a few of the same roads as the Catfish Century I rode a few times back in the late eighties and early nineties so I thought I would head out to Crescent City and hit a few of the roads I didn't ride yesterday. Started out with a section of Route 1 which I dreaded a little since it was the worst part of the Scenic Metric Century though that section was a little north of this one. Traffic was lighter and wind wasn't so bad so it didn't seem as dangerous. Still felt good to hit 304 and head on the secondary roads into the interior. Roads are pretty much straight and flat in this part of Florida. Scenery in the interior is cattle grazing and vegetable\fruit production. Noticed the migrant workers have come up in the world. The old pickups and beaters seemed to have all been replaced by shiny new pickups and SUVs. Cranked off some miles and waved to the occasional cow until turning north on SR 17 and heading toward the west shore of the lake. Banners across the main drag of Crescent City advertised the Catfish Festival this past Saturday, so it still goes on albeit without the cycling. Continued north out of town and started looking for a eastern route to head back to the coast, but roads north of the lake were not to be found. Noticed my mileage was approaching fifty which indicated I'd be doing a little more then my planned sixty to seventy. Found a bridge in San Marcos heading the right way and crossed the northern inflow or outflow of the lake and made the turn back toward Ormond. Road sign up ahead informed me that the shortest route home would be a straight thirty six mile ride into an ever increasing headwind. Had only brought two water bottles today which provided to be insufficient once the temperature and wind rose into the unpleasant range. Suffering mounted as I tapped off mile after slow mile. Could have gotten some relief at Bunnell as an ice cream stand was open at the edge of town. Line looked a little long so opted to suck it up for the final ten miles and bypassed the oasis. Last three or four miles were tough and thought about stopping along side the road and resting or walking a bit to take the edge off the pain as thought I might end before the ride did. Finally saw the interstate overpass that was a quarter mile from my motel and kept at it a while longer and made a final push for cold fluids and air conditioning. Hadn't planned on it but almost did my third century in three days.
