 Ridge Road Climbing
May started off real nice with warm sunshine. Worked in the yard for a bit then went out for a morning ride as rain showers are forecast for the afternoon. There hasn't been much sunshine of late so wanted to make the most of it. Goal today was to push the first climb to Catherine then spin the remaining climb to the top of Seymourville, recover on the downgrade to Horseheads and then slam the tailwind home. Tried to get out of the saddle at the start of the climb and did a little better than last week but didn't get far. Pushed and spun my way up with the goal of a 12 mph avg. Fell a little short with a 10.6. Would have been happy with an eleven. Spun ever upwards toward Seymourville doing well on the early section, but lost it coming out of the gully. Ended up with a 10.1 over the top. Pushed the big gear on the downgrade after cresting the hill but came up a little short again as I hit a small shower and had to slow and weave my way through bad sections of road as well as an increasing headwind. Made Horseheads at 14.0 and went into hammer mode with a goal of lifting the speed to 17.0 by Montour. Had good speed to Millport and the 17 looked doable until I hit a heavy shower north of Millport. The wind also shifted into my face as the rain started. The rain, temperature and my speed all fell fast. Fortunately the rain only lasted for a three mile stretch and then I was riding in bright sunshine again with a warm southern tailwind. Speed picked up a bit as I warmed back up but was only able to salvage a 16.4 out of the ride which left me a little disappointed. Ended up with two soakers at the end of the ride but despite the rain it was still a pleasurable ride. It makes a big difference not catching a chill during the ride.
