Decided to do some hills today and test my climbing legs. Started of with Havana Glen with its lovely 3/4 mile of 16% grade. Failed the first test of the day as my legs gave out about halfway up and concentrated on surviving it. Next hill was Swartout with the ascent to park station. Had fifteen miles of rolling terrain for my legs to recover before the next test. Swartout is a terrific twisting climb tending to be rather long but maximum grade being a managable seven percent. Enjoyed the climb and kept good pressure on the legs. Climb was followed by a long gradual descent to Horseheads. Next climb was Chambers another long ascent mostly gradual with a couple of steps of nine percent. Kept the heart rate up on this one and finished the climb in good shape. Short fast decent to Chambers then a flat section to Beaver Dams. Last climb was Sugar Hill famous for being the high point of Schuyler County. Climb is long and gradual. Did okay on it but legs were running out of fuel by this time so I backed off a little and ate all my supplies and finished off my water. Recovered enough to finish the climb in good form and was rewarded with a nine mile descent back to the house. Other than the first steep climb I had a good day on the bike but legs are pretty well trashed.
