 Hard Climbing
Ended up taking the day off yesterday due to rain and abnormally cold weather brought down by a howling north wind. Didn't even want to go outside yesterday much less ride in it. Sun came out late in the day today but wind was still blowing hard yet no longer howling. Decided to hang around town and just do some steep climbing rather than push through the wind. Started out with the Mother of All Schuyler County hills the Hayes Hill Road. Did the first half of the hill and felt good and thought this isn't so bad. Didn't last long and suffered when the grade went over twenty percent. Just tried to suck in air and keep the legs turning as I staggered up the wall. Got so bad my GPS kicked off as I have the low speed setting at 3 mph. Did survive to the top and enjoyed the downhill back to Odessa then opted for a milder climb up to Catherine before dropping back to Montour via Jackson Hill rd. Havana Glen was next and again felt good for the first half of the climb and kept a good standing spin going up the eighteen percent grade. Hit the eighteen percent grade on the second half after resting a bit on the twelve percent section and had my legs turn to rubber. Suffered slowly the remainder of the climb to the crest then dropped back to Montour via New Odessa hill. Next hill was Stueben Street or as it is better known Hospital Hill. Didn't have any trouble on this one as all the steep stuff is at the bottom and the finish is only ten percent grade. Last hill was Cass road and didn't have much left for it but spun up it in my lowest gear. Ended up with very sore legs but did three eighteen percent plus grade climbs without going more than five miles from my house. Had a really poor average speed for the day but found the hard climbing very satisfying.
