 Rock Stream
Took yesterday off and ate quite a bit of carnival food so wasn't sure how much power I could convert the funnel cake into. Tried time trialing the Rock Stream- Beaver Dams course. It was a cool seventy degrees with a moderate northwest wind. Since I was hoping for a good overall time I tried to push the speed a little through Watkins to the base of the first climb. Not sure whether it was the headwind or not being warmed up but wasn't impressed with my early effort. Went out with a combined arms approach today by spinning the climbs in the small ring to save the quads for the long downhill straights. So tried to keep a good spin up the first climb to Gabriel's Junction and did okay except for bogging down a bit near the Motor Court. Pushed the big gears across the top to Rock Stream and felt fairly good with the effort in the headwind. Had a better than expected climb to Reading Center and things started to look good as I rolled into town. Bogged down again on the climb up Church Street and was hopeful I would catch a tailwind across the gap to Sugar Hill. Unfortunately the wind on the top of the ridge was coming from the west instead of the north and I struggled to hold my average speed when I needed it to be climbing albeit slowly. Perked back up on the climb up Sugar Hill which was probably a result of being out of the wind rather than my climbing ability. Had a blast over the top as I got the bike back in the big gear and hammered the downhill to Townsend. Bogged down a bit again on the final short climb out of Townsend but it was all high speed after that. Crosswind really didn't have much effect to Beaver Dams and picked up a tailwind down Johnson Hollow. I had kept a strong effort to the foot of Johnson Hollow and was very encouraged to see the flag at the shrine of the Seven Eleven indicating I would have a tailwind for the final seven. Thought I really had a shot at a plus eighteen average which is a little short of my best time at nineteen two but since I am ten pounds heavier now I would have been delighted with an eighteen. So exited Johnson Hollow with a 17.7 and high hopes. Only had the tailwind for a half mile into Millport. Wind out of the north side village was in my face and pretty much shut me down. Legs went south with the wind and could only milk another 0.1 out of it to finish at 17.8 mph. Still had a good ride with forty miles of strong effort and only giving out in the last few miles. Climbing is still sub par but am making good speed in the big chain ring.
