Got away from work and to Des Peres City Park for the start/finish of Thursday Night Road Ride. I arrived at the parking lot about 5:20, there were lots of cars, but not any cyclist. There was a picnic at the pavilion, and folks were arriving for the co-ed softball game. After parking my truck, I took a leisurely stroll around the lot just to make sure I didn't miss another cyclist - didn't spot one.
I hung around for a while, then spotted a couple other guys getting their bikes ready, so I got all my stuff out & ready, and rendezvoused with 5 other guys, and we hung around till the top of the hour – when the chimes at the neighboring church start to ring. The route for this year is the same as last year’s, which I’m OK with because of the two major hills on the route. I plan to use this route as means of training for my tour next month. The first hill is Mautenne Dr. It’s a residential street, but it is a fairly steep climb for a couple blocks. The second is climbing up Marshall Rd coming out of Valley Park, by the Kirkwood Athletic Association ball fields. This is ‘only’ a half-mile up about a 6-8% grade, with no shoulder, but fairly light traffic.
Overall, it was a good night for a ride! Even though the forecast for today called for scattered thunderstorms (like last Thursday), nothing developed in the immediate region.
