 Wet Group Ride
Sporadic rain let up by afternoon and temperature got near sixty by one. Got together with Iron Doug and Mighty Young Joe for a group ride. We had about three hours to get a ride in before the next storm front passed through. We headed out for Harris Hill to do some downhill bombing on its the steep side. We began by climbing Fitzpatrick hill and heading to Elmira via the Middle Road. Legs were on the heavy side from yesterday's effort but as I wasn't the slowest climber this year I got to rest for a bit at the top of the climb. We had a light tailwind through the rollers and made good time to Horseheads. We added a couple miles to the planned ride by going a little further south in Elmira than we needed to, but the riding was sweet so what's a few extra miles. We started the return up Hoffman Street before ascending the second long climb of the day up West Hill Road. The climb is four or five miles of moderate grade. Most of it is probably three or four percent but there are occasional six or eight percent sections. I again had a fairly easy climb and had good flow. As we neared the top it started to rain lightly. The roads were wet, and I really didn't dare to go to fast as the braking on my wet carbon rims is fairly useless and have to keep the brake pads rubbing to keep the rims dryer. Still got up to near fifty but didn't feel very comfortable cornering on the steep grade. Rain got progressively worse as we neared the airport and we all had two soakers. The most of the last twenty miles was done in a heavy rain. We occasionally did some fast paceline work but the price of drafting is rooster tail in the face. Once we got back to Schuyler County the rain let up and we finished with a couple miles of dry road. Legs were tired at the end but had a fun group ride despite the less than nice conditions.
