Its like Deja Vu all over again.
All week long, the forecast for today called for rain, and rain it did. It didn’t rain hard & heavy, mostly a light rain or heavy mist, and even a little bit of dry road before lunch. The road would dry fairly quickly if/when it stopped raining, because of the wind,; the constant wind. The weather today was not too different than the weather experienced during the Indian Crossing Century ride last year (see blog entry for 5/15/10).

And again, like last year, the route today was the modified ‘flood’ route, since the organizers could not be certain enough that a couple of the roads that are used on the normal route would not be closed due to high river levels (Mississippi River). So, the morning 65 miles was two loops out & back from/to the start/finish at the St Francis of Assisi Church Senior Center in Portage des Sioux, MO.

As I rolled out of Portage des Sioux to start the ride, I could see a couple cyclists about a quarter mile or so ahead of me. I knew I couldn’t over exert myself this early in the day trying to catch them, even though riding with them would be more efficient. I did finally catch them about 15 miles later, right as we were pulling into the first rest stop.

I ended up riding the rest of the day with Tom & Rancy(?), completing the 100 mile day. There was less rain during the afternoon, but I kept the rain coat on the whole time, especially since it helped to keep me warm.

As I reviewed the blog about last year’s ride, I remember how tired I was from overtaxing my body on a ride that it was not prepared to handle. This year, I am happy to report that I am feeling pretty good after today’s ride. Doing the 60 mile ride last week I’m sure helped my body get acclimated to longer rides, along with the base miles I have amassed over the last several months.

I am glad I was able to complete today's miles as I look forward to the Wisconsin Tour - Door County that starts in just over a month (6/18-25).
