Fairly Pleasant day today so I headed off on a longish ride to Pennsylvania on SR 14 where I did a climbing loop and back returned home on SR 14. Recently I have been taking it fairly easy to the climbs and after the climbs I am always trying to make up time at the end to get a respectable average speed. Today I decided to try to go into the climb with a higher average and then just try to maintain at the finish. So I pushed steady upgrade into a headwind for twenty miles to Elmira and started the climbing with a 16.7 average. If I didn't have to pass through the Elmira with its many stoplights I would have been well over seventeen, but what you going to do? Normally I take Clemens Center Parkway through the city but noticed today on the southern sections that bicycles and pedestrians are prohibited. Not sure whether this is recent, or if I have been breaking the law for the last few years. Anyway I detoured from my intended path and got to experience some of the wonderful ambience the back streets of Elmira has to offer. I got to dodge empty liquor bottles thrown in street but fortunately known of them were broken. Climbing started at around twenty five miles and continued gradually on the highway to Fassett. Second part of the climb runs along a stream and is again mostly gradually with a couple of steep rollers thrown in. Spun fairly well for the first three of the four miles of climbing out of Fassett. Lost a good chuck of time over the last mile but it still was pleasant climbing. After reaching the top of the climb at Bird Creek road the rest of the ride should have been cake. Had a good time on the downhill to Mosherville and pushed a big gear with a strong tailwind back to Elmira. Had to pass through Elmira again but lights weren't as contrary today. Was hoping for a tailwind home, but the wind decided to shift to the west and that hope died. Still had a swirling crosswind though that wasn't too bad. Legs got heavy after about fifty five miles today which is later than normal. Fairly good riding today though I always underestimate the length of this ride and run short of water. No other riders sighted toady.
