As I left the house, at little after 6:15 AM, I was hoping I could get to Portage des Sioux and get on the road before it started raining - the radar showed that it was moving in and the forecast called for rain all morning (100% early and 40% closer to lunch). It started to drizzle as I got my bike out of the car, and there was a little bit of a breeze.
The guy in the car next to me a rolled on out and returned within a couple minutes - he was wearing a t-shirt & shorts, and said it was a bit chilly out there and didn't have a jacket, so he thought he would wait a while (couple hours?) for it to warm up and head out later. He was in town from Houston on business. When I returned to my car after completing the first AM loop his car was gone & a Porsche 944 was parked in its place.
With the wind & light rain, I went ahead & dond my rain jacket. The rain picked up as I made my way down the road. It rained most of the morning, and a light rain fell during the middle half of the afternoon loop. The real story though was the wind - stiff wind. Don't have official stats yet, but was probably 8-12 mph from NE - even though the rain clouds moved in from the SSW.
I knew I would be pushing myself today, even with good weather conditions, as I have not done much of anything over 30 miles in the last 6 months. Did a century back on the first weekend of Oct, and a 35 mile jaunt the first weekend of Dec. My legs were feeling fatigue trying to finish the morning loops - which was heading into the wind.
Because of the high river levels, a couple roads on the scheduled route were under water, so they reverted to the 'flood' route, like was done a couple years ago. The morning loop - to be 65 miles - was actually a loop-within a loop, with the 2nd rest stop actually at the start/finish before heading out a slightly different path to the 1st rest stop (doubling as the 3rd rest stop) before returning back to the start/finsh for the lunch stop.
There were some folks that left without riding any miles, some that rode the first AM loop and called it a day, some endured the 2nd AM loop to get a metric in for the day, but several, like myself, toughed it out and completed all that & the PM 35 mile loop.
This is a flat ride, especially when cut to these shorter loops. Riding this region is all about the wind. With the rain today, that changed a couple factors - a little bit more attention to saftey, especiallly with all the RR crossings - but the game plan still had to be about the wind. But even then, the body can only do so much if it's not trained for such extreme conditions & distances.
