Headed up to Marietta, NY for a short 17 mile road race around Otisco lake. Course is the same for the Giro de Otisco except it starts and finishes on the flat section and has the killer climb at the halfway point instead of the finish. Heavy rains and cool temperatures seems to have dampened the enthusiam for the race as there were only twenty or so participants for the race and several others for the family tour. Race separated out of the gate winnowing it down quickly to just four of us at the first turn working a loose paceline. Young rider in the front missed the first turn while myself and a young Hokie rider headed for the hill. We rode side by side for a while trying not to capitalize on the other riders' missed turn , but we didn't wait for them either. We were concerned as to whether we would be able to climb the steep 20% grade in the heavy rain due to loss of traction. The answer soon came as the Hokie rider Andy powered away from me on the climb and time trialed the remaining nine miles for the win. I kept up good speed in my own time trial in the miserable conditions, but never saw Andy until the finish line. Ride actually was kind of fun and felt bad for the organizers lack of turnout as they are very pleasant people. I've done the race twice now and both times were in the rain with light turnout. Got some good swag for my second place finish. Hope they continue to have it and I can race there again.
