...And More Hiking At Parfrey's Glen
A fun weekend of camping, hiking, more hiking, kayaking, and more hiking.
On Saturday we did the 500 foot vertical climb up the West Bluff Trail and returned via the Tumbled Rocks Trail. It was our first time on Tumbled Rocks. It's a very kool trail, not too difficult, but very scenic as it winds through the boulder fields near the lake.
There were a lot of rock climbers out, and we even helped out in a rescue, when a man twisted and injured his knee when he stepped in a hole while hiking in the rocks. We brought down the stretcher/sled so they could carry him out. (photo #3) From camp this was a 3.5 mile hike.
It was still very windy so after eating we went hiking at Parfrey's Glen. The park just opened this year after being closed early last year from a Spring flood that devastated the park.
The Glen is an amazingly beautiful place. It's incredible to see the damage done by the forces of water. The tiny little stream actually changed course during the flood. Debris blocked the path of flowing water and the stream jumped over to the walking path and moved tons of soil and rocks to make a new route. (photo #10) Very little remains of the original hiking path.
There used to be a boardwalk that went to the waterfall, but it was taken out by the massive water attack, and all that remains are stubby support posts popping up from the earth.
The waterfall observation area had a circular stone wall that was mostly destroyed by falling rock and a huge sink hole. (photo #13) This was a 1.4 mile hike.
