 Cap to Cap Trail
Rode the paved trail that runs between the Jamestown Settlement in VA to Richmond. It is predominately flat with on the eastern third and it has a few five percent climbs in the middle section of the fifty-mile-long trail. Decided to ride a metric length today and add in some intervals to hopefully improve my speed. Spun the first ten miles and then attempted to accelerate and hold speed for every other mile. Only able to hold a good speed for three quarters of the first mile before running out of leg. After spinning a mile made my second attempt and ran out of leg after half the length. Started to only try to sprint a quarter mile after that. Was more successful at that and repeated for a few times. Miles passed quickly and stopped the intervals once I passed into the rolling part of the course. Turned around at the thirty-two-mile marker and was going to ride easy on the return trip. Got passed by a rider on a time trial bike as I was getting a gel pack out of my pocket and decided to see if I could stay with him. Accelerated until I was feeling some draft and then tried to hang on. He was traveling in the low twenties, and it took some effort for me to settle in, but I was able to do so. I wasn't able to follow him back onto the trail after transitioning off the trail through the street in Charles City as was going too fast to hit the passage through the curb. Got dropped and had to travel in the road until there was another break in the curb. Chased for a mile before losing more time waiting for traffic as the trail crossed to the opposite side of the road. Chased for eight or nine miles keeping him in sight and maintained speeds in the low twenties. I would gain a little on the upgrades and lose more on the downs. He finally started to back off the gas with around ten miles left of the trail. I had to keep the pressure on for another mile and caught him. I passed him on the bridge over a river at the seven-mile mark that is the only significant climb remaining. After a fast descent on the back side of the bridge we both backed off and chatted for the remaining miles. I got a very demanding workout, and it was satisfying in that I was able maintain a high heartrate and high wattage for over ten miles and also it bared that I really need to be able to get the speed up a lot more before the time trials I registered for in July. I need to able to maintain speeds in the mid-twenties to be competitive
