 Logan Climbing & ITT
Opted for the steep climbing in the morning and a ten mile time trial in the afternoon again. Hit Skyline Drive hard, at least for me, in the early in the morning and had a great climb assisted by a good tailwind and warm temperature. Got over the top about a half mile an hour faster than usual and thought I'd end up with a good time for the day. Second series of climbs to Logan went well also although I didn't really gain much more I kept the leg speed up enough to hold the earlier gains. Rolled into Logan just shy of sixteen mph average which is a decent effort and figured with a fairly light south wind I should be able to get the average up to eighteen easily and possibly nineteen if I could keep my focus. Didn't work out that way as just couldn't work up any speed on the way back and the headwind, although light, was draining me. Got the average up to almost eighteen as I finished the downhill into Watkins but lost big chunks of time through traffic and legs were worn out and just spun out the last three miles. Had great climbs but couldn't follow through on the downgrades.

Time trial turned out to be a total disaster as got tired during the warm up. Started off into a brisk headwind and failed to build any speed. Usually I try not to let the speed drop below twenty on the course and today was struggling to even get to twenty. First time check found me forty seconds off the pace and tried to force the speed up on the second mile. Didn't work though as I lost another forty seconds and pretty much abandoned at that point. Tried to spin easily but ended up with heavy legs and just rode it out to the turn around. Thought I might try to hammer the back nine and although I got the speed up into the high thirties I couldn't hold it and struggled for the last four miles trying to keep the speed in the upper twenties. Ended up with a 27:17 which was four minutes slower than last week. Didn't bode well for this weekends racing.
