 Arnot Forest Climbs
Great day for riding with temperature hovering around a perfect eighty degrees and just a slight southwest wind. The course today had four good climbs starting the engineered climb up to Odessa with its steady seven percent grade then a tough one up through Arnot forest. Rode comfortably out toward Van Etten and spun the approach to the nasty climb easier than usual as really haven't been climbing the steep stuff well and wasn't looking to the pain the near twenty percent grades were waiting to deliver. Turned out that the steep stuff wasn't too bad and scooted right up them. With the first two climbs out of the way I used up my gained elevation on a ten mile fast decent through Newfield then down into Ithaca. Felt fair on the third climb up 96 out of Ithaca. it is another very long steady grade. Wind had pretty much disappeared. Had hoped to have a tailwind up the climb but would rather have no wind than the killer winds of the last few weeks. Stopped for ice cream at the stand in Trumansburg and filled up my water bottles. Enjoyed the milkshake but not sure whether it was worth the money they charged for it as could purchase a half gallon at the store for the price and have a good chuck of change left over. Legs didn't really fire back up after the stop and still had another climb and twenty miles to go. Spun the climb through Searsburg and didn't think I was doing very well until I easily caught and passed another rider who appeared to be struggling on the hill. Made it to the tower and called it good enough and coasted most of the last fifteen miles of descent. Had a good day on the bike but was disappointed again that I didn't see the bear in my cruise through the Arnot Forest.
