Rode from my house out to John & Lee Harris' house (off of Hwy DD & 40/64 in O'Fallon, MO) for a fish-fry gathering. It was an enjoyable ride, partly for doing something different than normal, and partly for riding some roads that I've been eye balling as we drive out to their house for small group meetings.
However, earlier in the day Jacque & I tilled flower beds & covered them with mulch - that was 3+ yards of mulch, about 3 dozen wheel barrow trips from the driveway in the front of the house to various points around the backyard. We ran out of flower beds before running out of mulch. So, we offered the rest to a neighbor a couple doors up the street, who were out & about doing fertilizing their yard. They were happy to haul it up the street and cover their front planter bed!
The route I took was from my house to Creve Coeur Park to take the Page Extension across the Missouri River. To get to that point, I made my way to Bridgeton and was able to ride down Old St Charles Rock Rd, even the part restricted to local traffic only due to the Good Friday Tornado - the police officer manning the road blockade allowed to go through with advise of "Be careful." WOW!! What a sight - no I did not have a camera with me. If I did I would have taken pictures, but with out stopping - I wouldn't want to be observed as a 'looky-loo'. About a month after the fact and still so many signs of the destruction - foundations without houses, houses without siding, windows or roofs, and houses with 'blue tarps' for roof cover. And not any obious signs of rebuilding, though there were some residents in some not so damaged houses mowing yards, coming & going, etc. But, WOW!
After crossing the river, I rode south on the Katy Trail & Greens Bottom Rd to Missouri Research Park Dr, then to Technology Dr - which was a very quit road being lined with business and a Saturday - to Hwy N to Sommers Rd.
Riding on the Katy Trail was pretty nice, even though it is crushed limestone and I was on my road bike. I've ridden limestone trails on this bike before, and since it didn't rain last night/today, the trail was very ridable - it was also very shady & cool being covered by all the trees, and there were no cars, traffic lights or hills to deal with on this stretch of today's route. When I reached the research center access point, I was about toast, and still had about 10 miles to go. Again, the roads for the rest of the route were 'quiet', but they were pretty much in the sun, wind and not flat - rolling hills.
I was tempted to call for pick-up, but kind of got a rush of adrenalin when I turned onto Technology Dr. Bummer, adrenalin doesn't last forever and I 'willed' myself to get to Hwy N then turn onto Summers Rd where it was only a few more blocks to my destination.
They were just starting the feeding line when I arrived, but I was too warm to eat anything right away. Actually I ate some dessert (Cool Lemon Pie and Death by Chocolate) while continuing to cool down, then finally ate some fish (crappie), potatoes, and baked beans (mmm, mmm, mmm) just before we left to come home.
After we got home, I topped of the evening with a Klondike Bar (mmm mmm mmm).
