Fairly nice day had me heading around Seneca Lake for the first time this year. Had plans to do a time trial tomorrow so the plan for today was to spin the headwind at an easy pace to Geneva, catch a tailwind in Geneva and spin at a higher speed up to Ovid then put it in the big chainring and push the tailwind and downgrade to get my legs used to higher speeds than I am used to riding. First part of the plan went off well and had a pretty good ride going to Dresden. Got pulled over by a driver looking for the Keuka Inlet bike trail near Dresden and gave him directions and chatted a bit. Legs didn't feel as clean when I started back up as when I had stopped but only had another fifteen miles of rolling grade until I caught the tailwind so wasn't too concerned. Wind started to shift as I pulled into Geneva and now was coming out of the west rather than the north. Headed up to Ovid without the expected tailwind and just ground it out. Lost my focus, got distracted and ended up counting telephone poles along the old army base until the final climb to Ovid. Stopped and got some fluids and food in Ovid and enjoyed a little sunshine that occasionally broke through the cloud cover. Had no legs left for my big push back to Watkins and ended up dragging myself home. Never got any speed out of the descent and average speed was the same as coming up the other side in the headwind. Finally got a little tailwind just before the descent into Watkins but it was too late to pick up the average and rode in with dead legs and disappointed in my performance as it didn't bode well for tomorrow's ITT.
