 Bluff Point

Back felt good enough to work on some climbs so I figured it was time to tackle the bluff point course. Course has five serious climbs with the third climb being the infamous bluff located in the crotch of Keuka lake north of Hammondsport. Had two climbs and 45 miles to do before reaching the bluff. First climb out of Watkins isn't really two bad being a couple of miles of 7% grade with a nasty 10% kicker after making the turn on 14A just before reading center. Spun the climb in the saddle and kept a good pace. The second climb out of Dundee on 14A to Penn Yan is actually the easiest of the five climbs but for me today it was the hardest as it was into a stiff headwind. Could not even generate much speed on the downhill section. Was surprised to actually see another cyclist on the east lake road, as it is the first cyclist I've seen on the road since I have been back in NY. Had hoped to have a nice tail wind on the east lake road but it never materialized and instead got to ride in a swirling crosswind. Made it to the point and started the approach on dirt this year which was superior to the broken pavement that was here in years past. The climb to the monastary is paved and all the rain has left the road clean. Surface is much better than it used to be back in the day when you needed to climb the 23% grade on a loose sand surface. I used to do it in a 42/19 but now days have to use a 40/27 to get over the top. Wasn't really that bad today as there was a nice tailwind up the climb and legs worked well until the final kick around the curve just before the summit. Didn't pick up the tailwind on the run back into Hammondsport either but the swirling crosswind was much perferred to the earlier headwind. Stopped and had a Classic Coke at the park before starting the final two climbs. Had a really nice climb out on the fourth climb out of Hammondsport and did quite well until hitting the three sisters after making the turn onto Mudlake. Legs were wasted and just spun up the fifth and final climb at Sebring Hill. Had a good tailwind after making the turn onto Mudlake and enjoyed the nine mile descent back into Watkins. Average speed was unimpressive today but enjoyed all the climbing.
