 Millport ITT
Had planned on doing some hills in the morning than a 10 mile ITT in the afternoon but the combination of nasty wind and dead legs kept me laying in my deck chair working on my tan rather than riding the bike. Got my designated time trial bike out and pumped up the tires before the scheduled ride time for the ITT. Took a test ride and had a problem with the brakes being too tight and wheels were rubbing from tire flex whenever I got out of the saddle. Felt bad though so didn't think I would be spending much time standing and hammering today so left the brakes as they were. Ride time temperature was in the low eighties with a hot sun which I seem to do well in but wind was steady out of the south at around fifteen miles an hour with infrequent gusts much higher. Had a pretty poor start as didn't get up enough speed to carry me over the first little climb that is about a quarter of a mile from the start. Dropped well below twenty before cresting it and felt strained just doing that. Decided I had to do better so rallied on the second mile and actually saw the speed climb up to where it needed to be. Got my first look at my one minute man at the two mile mark and was both pleased and surprised that I had gained eighteen seconds on him. Didn't see him again as the course twists and turns up through the valley. The strong headwind proved to be too much for me and found myself overtaxed and losing steam as I approached the turnaround at the five mile mark. Still had most of the eighteen seconds at the turnaround but legs were fading fast. Had a good turnaround and started the downhill with the tailwind. Couldn't get speed much above twenty eight and decided to go on the defense rather than risk cracking. Knew I was losing time on my minute man as I was able to see about forty-five seconds ahead and he was nowhere in sight. Couldn't keep much pressure on the pedals so just spun fast and tried to stay as aero as possible. Had a good final half mile as finally got the speed up into the thirties. Finished in 25:25 @ a 23.6 average speed. Goal was to break 24.0 which I thought was doable under the current conditions but didn't have enough leg. Did 'beat" my minute man though as ended up five seconds ahead. Ended up the day riding with the group on cooldown and got in 30 easy miles.
